How a structure is counted

A structure is one named lock, bridge, sluice or similar on one waterway, taken from notices that start and end at the same place. Two with the same name more than 500m apart are different structures. Notices that overlap, or where one starts the day after another ends, are one episode: a re-issued notice is not a new failure. A structure is listed once 2 or more of its episodes were the asset itself failing.

Each episode is counted by why it happened: the asset itself (wear and tear, ground moved, cause not stated, other cause); someone else (pollution, struck by boat or vehicle, someone else's works, vandalism); weather.
