Following recent rainfall and an improvement in water levels, the Caldon Canal will reopen from Stockton Brook (Summit Pound) through to the Trent & Mersey Canal from tomorrow morning (Thursday 17 September) Please note that the section between Hazlehurst Junction and Froghall will remain closed to navigation until further notice. We will continue to monitor conditions closely and provide further updates as more information becomes available. Please note that drought-related restrictions remain in place on other parts of the network. Before travelling, we encourage all customers to check the latest notices on our website for up-to-date information on any restrictions or closures that may affect their journey. Due to the drought conditions affecting most of England, the Caldon Canal remains closed. We are continuing to monitor conditions and will update this notice as the situation develops.

Due to continued pressure on water resources, the Caldon Canal will be temporarily closed to navigation from 9am, Saturday 1 August 2026 until further notice. Following ongoing assessments by our operational and water management teams, this temporary closure is necessary to conserve water, protect canal infrastructure, and support the longer-term management of the navigation. From 9am, Saturday 1 August 2026, navigation will be suspended between Locks 1 and 14. We recognise that closures can have a significant impact on our customers; if this closure creates particular difficulties for you, please get in touch with us to discuss your circumstances. We will do our best to identify any support or assistance that we may be able to offer. However, it is necessary to help manage limited water resources and safeguard the canal network during a period of sustained pressure on water availability. The closure will remain under regular review and will be lifted as soon as conditions allow. We will continue to provide updates as the situation develops. Boaters are encouraged to check the latest navigation notices before travelling, as operating arrangements may change at short notice. We sincerely appreciate the patience, understanding, and cooperation of all boaters during this challenging period.
