A navigation closure is required on the Dewsbury Arm to enable the replacement of a Network Rail bridge that has reached the end of its serviceable life. The works will be carried out by contractors on behalf of the Transpennine Route Upgrade programme. To undertake the bridge replacement safely, a substantial crash deck will be installed across the full width of the canal beneath the bridge. This temporary structure is required to allow the removal of the existing bridge deck, repairs and preparation of the bridge abutments, and the installation of the new bridge deck. Boat movements will be facilitated during suitable breaks in the construction programme where it is safe and practical to do so. Opportunities for passage may be available at key stages of the works, including during bridge deck removal activities when temporary works can be adjusted to allow access. Every effort will be made to minimise the duration of the closure and we will provide further updates as the detailed construction programme is finalised. We have worked closely with Network Rail and local marinas to minimise the impact of these essential works on customers and will continue to provide updates as the programme develops. We thank customers for their understanding while this important infrastructure project is carried out.
